Medicare Supplement Premium Going Up? Here’s What to Know Before Switching
By Star Family Insurance Services

A higher Medicare supplement premium is a good reason to review your policy. Before moving to another company, consider benefits, eligibility and timing together.
Compare more than the price
Ask which benefits the proposed policy covers, what you would still pay yourself and whether the quoted premium includes discounts. Have the insurer explain how premiums may change over time. A lower initial price does not guarantee lower future costs.
Check whether you qualify
Outside your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or a guaranteed issue protection, an insurer may use medical underwriting when you apply. State protections may provide additional opportunities. Review the rules that apply to your age, location and current policy.
Don’t assume that October 15–December 7 means you can change supplement companies without health questions.
Coordinate the effective dates
A Medigap change does not always have to wait until January 1. Ask the new insurer to confirm approval and the effective date, and coordinate your existing coverage carefully. Do not cancel your current policy before confirming the new coverage and understanding your rights.
Bring these questions to your review
- Does this policy provide the benefits I need?
- Will I need to answer medical questions?
- Do any state or federal protections apply?
- What is the confirmed premium and coverage start date?
Jim can help you organize those questions so you can make an informed decision.
